How to re-list an item when a winner doesn't pay
This guide shows you how to use Re-list Item to clear an unpaid or abandoned item off a bidder’s invoice and put it back up for bidding — in one step instead of manually deleting purchases and resetting the item.
Use it when a winning bidder doesn’t show up, refuses to pay, or returns an item.
What Re-list Item does
Section titled “What Re-list Item does”Re-listing an item does all of the following at once:
- Removes all purchases and bids on the item from the bidder’s invoice.
- Resets the item so it can take new bids.
- Moves the item into another auction, or leaves it in the current one.
- Optionally adds a restocking fee to the original bidder’s invoice.
Prerequisites
Section titled “Prerequisites”- Manager access to the auction.
- If you plan to charge a restocking fee, a For Sale item must already exist in the auction to use as the fee.
- If you plan to move the item, a destination auction in Setup, Preview, Pre-sale, Paused, or Open status. Closed and reconciled auctions are not available as destinations.
1. Open the Re-list Item action
Section titled “1. Open the Re-list Item action”You can start from either place:
- From the invoice — open the bidder’s invoice and choose Re-list item from the menu.
- From the item — open the item modal and choose Re-list item from its menu.
2. Review what will happen
Section titled “2. Review what will happen”The Re-list Item modal opens and confirms the action: this removes all purchases and bids on the item and allows you to move it to a different auction for new bids.
3. Charge a restocking fee (optional)
Section titled “3. Charge a restocking fee (optional)”Check Charge Restocking Fee, then pick a For Sale item from the dropdown. Handbid adds a purchase called Item Restocking Fee to the original bidder’s invoice.
Leave the box unchecked if you’re not charging the bidder anything.
4. Choose where the item goes
Section titled “4. Choose where the item goes”Use the Move to Auction dropdown to select the destination auction. The item is moved, not copied — it leaves the original auction.
To re-list the item in the same auction, select the current auction.
5. Confirm
Section titled “5. Confirm”Select Confirm. The purchases and bids clear, the item resets, and it appears in the destination auction ready for bidding.
Verify it worked
Section titled “Verify it worked”- The bidder’s invoice no longer shows the item (and shows the restocking fee, if you charged one).
- The item appears in the destination auction with no bids and no winner.
Common issues
Section titled “Common issues”- The destination auction isn’t in the dropdown — only auctions in Setup, Preview, Pre-sale, Paused, or Open status can receive a moved item. Change the destination auction’s status first.
- No For Sale item to pick for the fee — create a For Sale item in the auction, then re-run the re-list.
- You re-listed the wrong item — re-listing removes bid history for that item. Contact Handbid Support before taking further action.
